We’re undertaking important work on behalf of the Australian Government to inform the potential upgrade of Wellington Road including traffic, environmental and social studies.

Planning and investigations are currently considering the upgrade of Wellington Road between Napoleon Road in Rowville and Berwick Road in Narre Warren East.

In June 2021, the scope of the upgrade was reduced from Belgrave-Gembrook Road to Berwick Road based on traffic modelling investigations and the results from other environmental and planning assessments.

This development work will allow us to understand the environmental and social impact of the project, develop design options and confirm the project scope and costs.

For more information on this project including scope of works, benefits and timelines please visit the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications website.

Community feedback

What we heard

Thank-you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback during our recent engagement, held from 25 August to 7 September 2021. Over 1,400 surveys were completed and 104 pieces of feedback provided on our interactive map.

Feedback has helped us to understand how you are currently using Wellington Road as well as views on access, efficiency, safety, environmental values and what respondents like about living in the local area.

Key themes

Feedback highlighted the need for the upgrade to improve safety measures and decrease congestion along Wellington Road between Napoleon Road in Rowville and Berwick Road in Narre Warren East.

Feedback included:

  • 93% of respondents support a potential upgrade to Wellington Road.
  • Safety conditions are considered poor or very poor by 65% of respondents.
  • Berwick Road, Kelletts Road and Lysterfield Road intersections were identified as requiring improvement.
  • 77% of respondents identified congestion as their main concern when travelling along Wellington Road.
  • 50% of respondents said that they face delays greater than 10 minutes, attributed to the inefficiency of the road to handle current traffic volumes during peak hours and frequent accidents that occur in the area.
  • Respondents would like to see improved pedestrian, cycling and horse-riding trails, and would like better connections to Lysterfield Park, notably a connection between Logan Park Road and Dragon Track.
  • The preservation of the local environment is important to respondents, with 68% stating they would like shrubs and trees replanted along roadsides and in the median and 57% want fauna connections such as rope bridges considered in the design options.

Next steps

The feedback is being used to inform the development of design options and a Business Case which is anticipated to be finalised in 2022. Timelines and milestones will be determined through this detailed planning work.

We’ll continue to provide the community with updates and information as planning progresses.
