The Victorian Government is planning for a new purpose-built court and custody complex in West Melbourne. The new complex will aim to cater for prisoners on remand and have designated court facilities to ensure prisoners can be effectively presented to court.
Planning for the new West Melbourne Court and Custody Complex is an important step in ensuring a safe and secure justice system that meets expected demand.
It is expected that the new court and custody complex will include:
- up to six Magistrates’ Courts
- approximately 90 one-day holding cells to accommodate prisoners awaiting court hearings
- short-stay prison cells to accommodate approximately 150 to 200 remand prisoners for up to 14 days.
Corrections Victoria is working in collaboration with Victoria Police, Court Services Victoria and the Magistrates’ Court on the planning of the complex.
The Victorian Government is committed to keeping the community informed about the planning process of the complex.
This site will be the central hub for information and updates as the project progresses.
