The LAN program supports Aboriginal people to connect at the local level and set priorities, develop community plans, establish social cohesion, and feel empowered to participate in civic and community life.
The LAN program was established in 2007. Since that time, the Victorian Government has worked closely with Aboriginal organisations and communities to introduce reforms in Aboriginal affairs policy and practice. This has seen the transfer of decision-making power and resources outside of government and strengthened Aboriginal decision-making structures and organisations. Outcomes from this work are exemplified by the establishment of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and a process towards Treaty, design of the Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme, and establishment of the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission. Reforms will continue to have significant impacts on relationships between Victorian Traditional Owners, Aboriginal communities and all levels of government.
The LAN program is being reviewed with a view to changes that have occurred in Victorian Aboriginal affairs policy and practice in recent years. We are seeking views about the LAN program to inform its future direction – aspects about the program you think should be continued or strengthened, reformed or changed, and the appropriate future focus and opportunities for the program in the evolving Aboriginal affairs landscape.
