Overview

To finalise our designs, we’re seeking input from the local community and people who regularly travel along South Road.

Until 18 April, you can view the road designs and submit your feedback. You can share your thoughts by:

  • placing a marker on the map below to leave comments
  • asking a question
  • completing the survey.

We want to understand how the proposed road upgrade designs will impact you.

Project overview

We’re upgrading South Road between Warrigal Road and the Nepean Highway.

The upgrade will improve five key intersections:

  • create an extra citybound right-turn lane from South Road to improve access to Nepean Highway
  • modify the South Road, Jasper Road and Taylor Street dog-leg intersection
  • install a signalised pedestrian crossing at the Tucker Road intersection
  • create a new right-turn lane from South Road to East Boundary Road and improve the left turn slip lanes and pedestrian crossings
  • install traffic lights at the Bignell Road intersection, including new pedestrian crossings.

The project will also upgrade the off-road cycling path on Nepean Highway between South Road and Cummins Road.

Project benefits

South Road Upgrade will ease congestion and improve travel times for this key transport link for Melbourne's south east.

The upgrades will add to the record development of Melbourne’s south east transport network, making it easier for drivers to get to their destination.

The project will improve safety and reduce congestion for the 40,000 people who use South Road every day.

Access changes

As part of the project, we’ll upgrade five key intersections on South Road to remove bottlenecks and improve traffic flow.

This will include making some changes to the way you travel on South Road.

Access changes to Taylor Street

Once the upgrade is complete, Taylor Street will become left-in and left-out only.

Right turns will no longer be possible from Taylor Street into South Road. Instead, travel to Station Street where you can use the traffic lights to safely turn right.

You also won’t be able to turn right into Taylor Street from South Road. If you’re travelling east on South Road from the Nepean Highway, you can turn right at Station Street and access Taylor Street via Central Avenue.

There have been four crashes at the intersection of Taylor Street and South Road in the past five years. Removing right turns will improve safety while also improving traffic flow and reducing congestion on South Road.

Changes to U-turn breaks on South Road

As part of the upgrade, we’ll be removing several U-turn breaks on South Road:

  • east of Tucker Road
  • either side of East Boundary Road.

Drivers will need to perform U-turns at the intersections.

Drivers may perform a U-turn at the right turn facilities at the Tucker Road and East Boundary Road intersections.

While it may mean that you’ll need to travel a bit further to get where you need to go, your journey will be safer and more reliable once the upgrade is complete.
