Overview

We’re undertaking planning and development work on behalf of the Australian Government for the McKoy Street-Hume Freeway Intersection Upgrade in Wodonga.

What we heard

Thank-you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback in our recent engagement surveys for the McKoy Street – Hume Freeway Intersection Upgrade.

Traffic survey - key themes

An online traffic survey was open from 5 July to 26 July 2021. Feedback from this survey helped us to understand how respondents are currently using the intersection as well as views on access, efficiency and safety. Based on this feedback, we were able to refine our design options for the project.

Feedback highlighted the need for the intersection upgrade to create safer access and improve traffic flow for residents, commuters, local businesses, freight operators, and visitors to the area.

Feedback included:

  • Safety at the intersection is considered poor or ‘very poor’ by 80% of respondents
  • 73% of respondents feel there is no nearby alternative that provides access to their destination
  • Traffic flow and access are considered ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ by 70% of respondents
  • Feedback suggests the reduced speed limit through the intersection as a major contributor to poor traffic conditions.

Design option survey - key themes

An online design options survey was open from 30 September to 13 October 2021. Feedback from this survey helped us to understand how well the design options under consideration address views on access, traffic flow and safety, identified in the first survey. It also provided insight into environmental values and what respondents like about living in the local area.

  • Option 1 (Eastern overpass across the Hume Freeway and rail line with a full diamond interchange) was the preferred design rating the highest in safety, traffic flow and access.
  • Option 2 (Western overpass across the Hume Freeway and rail line with a full diamond interchange) followed as the second preferred design.
  • Option 3 (Restricting movements at the existing intersection) was the least preferred design.

Next steps

The feedback we received will help inform the development of a Business Case which is anticipated to be finalised in 2022. Timelines and milestones will be determined through our detailed planning work

We’ll continue to provide the community with updates and information as planning progresses.
