Overview

The removal of the level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert has been fast-tracked – with major construction starting in 2022 and boom gates gone in 2023.

After extensive engineering assessments, we’ve determined the best way to remove these level crossings is to lower the rail line into a trench beneath the roads and combine the existing Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations into a new premium station.

The rail trench design with a new premium station will be safer with better accessibility and deliver more frequent services. There will be entrances at both ends of the station platforms, providing easy access to the station for residents of both Surrey Hills and Mont Albert.

Once the project is complete, there will be no more level crossings between the city and Ringwood on Melbourne’s second-busiest rail line.

The project is in the early design stage and there are still a number of decisions about the design that have not been made.

Now is the chance to tell us your preferences and ideas on how we progress with designing certain aspects of the station and surrounding precinct.

Along with our technical investigations, your feedback will help shape the best outcome for the final designs.
