On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.

Works to remove the Argyle Avenue level crossing will start in 2020.

The level crossing will be removed by lowering the rail line into a trench and building a new road at the current level.

Thames Promenade will also be extended to the Nepean Highway. The Swanpool Avenue and Chelsea Road level crossings will be closed to vehicles.

The new road connection between Thames Promenade and the Nepean Highway will create a direct connection to major arterial roads, including the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and future Mordialloc Freeway.

A new Chelsea Station, with improved pedestrian and bus connections, will be built as part of the project.

The boom gates at the three Chelsea level crossings can be down for up to 40 per cent of the morning peak, when up to 30 trains run through the crossings. Current network plans to increase the number of trains running on the Frankston line, means more boom gate downtime.

Construction starts in 2020 and all the level crossings from Edithvale to Bonbeach will be gone in 2022.
