On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.

The level crossing at Aviation Road, Laverton was removed in September 2019.

The crossing was removed by moving the road onto a new bridge over the railway line.

The bridge features a pedestrian walkway and dedicated bike lanes, and a new road connection that maintains access to the nearby Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base.

The second phase of the project will begin in early 2021 and will involve construction of the pedestrian and cyclist underpass, upgraded station forecourts, landscaping works and 100 new and upgraded car parks at Aircraft Station as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Program.

We heard that the community would like additional car parking, a shared use path on Railway Avenue and secure bicycle storage. While these items are not currently within the project scope, we are working closely with other transport agencies on future plans for the station precinct.
