WorkSafe Victoria (WorkSafe), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has prepared the proposed Lead compliance code (the code) on behalf of the Victorian Government.

The code provides practical guidance for those who have duties or obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations), in relation to exposure to lead in the workplace.

Currently, WorkSafe does not have a compliance code regarding lead exposure in the workplace, this code will be a new compliance code. Once finalised, the code will replace the existing non-statutory guidance (Lead - A guidebook for workplaces) as WorkSafe’s main practical guidance for controlling risks associated with lead exposure in the workplace.

Employers, employees, other interested parties and members of the public are invited to make submissions on the proposed code now available for public comment.

Once the public comment period has closed a summary of submissions will be published (excluding any confidential submissions). All feedback provided during public comment will be considered and applied where appropriate. Pending Minister approval, it is expected the new code will be made in the first quarter of 2022.
