CopRice (a division of Ricegrowers Ltd) have applied for a works approval under section 19B of the Environment Protection Act 1970.

The site at 2 & 4 Barry Court, Wangaratta, VIC 3677 was previously operated by Feed Rite Pty Ltd to produce extruded equine feed. CopRice acquired the site in July 2019 and propose to upgrade the facility to expand the range of products to include extruded dog food.

A planning permit for the facility has been issued by Rural City of Wangaratta on 2 March 2020.

Works approval granted

EPA has issued a works approval with conditions to Ricegrowers Ltd. The works approval allows for the upgrade of an existing animal feed and pet food manufacturing facility. The facility will have a production capacity of 35,000 tonnes per year.

EPA received 1 submission during the public comment period. EPA values the contribution from the Wangaratta community received during our assessment process.

What this application proposes

The facility proposes to produce up to 35 ,000 tonnes per annum of extruded dog food and equine feed. Prior to the site being acquired by CopRice, approximately 12, 000 tonnes per annum of extruded equine feed was being produced. The proposal will enable the expansion of the range of products produced on the site to include extruded dog food.

The facility is intended to operate up to 24 hours, seven days a week at full production capacity.

The proposal is scheduled as D05 (Pet food processing).
