What does the application propose?

Barwon Region Water Corporation has applied for a development licence to upgrade the Colac Water Reclamation Plant at 1-33 Treatment Works Road Colac East 3250. This is to increase the overall operation capacity of the existing wastewater treatment facility from 5.7ML/day to 7 ML/day to service the projected increases in wastewater from the existing industries and population growth.

Treated effluent will be discharged to Colac Lake using the existing facility. The existing licence discharge limits for most of the parameters will be maintained and reduced.

The upgrade will increase the number of plant process units and upgrade some of the existing facilities within the existing plant. Proposed works include:

  • installation of:
    • a third high-rate anaerobic lagoon
    • a new waste unloading facility
    • a balance tank
    • a new chemically-enhanced primary treatment system.
  • upgrade of:
    • the sludge dewatering facility
    • existing chemical dosing system
    • the cogeneration system to create electricity and heat
  • replacement of existing ultraviolet disinfection system.

A planning permit from Colac Otway Shire Council is not required for the proposal.
