Overview

The draft Marine and Coastal Strategy is the first to be made under the Marine and Coastal Act 2018, and will:

  • Set the direction for achieving the long-term outcomes of the Marine and Coastal Policy 2020.
  • Identify priority actions to be completed over the next five years, and outline time frames and responsibility for delivery.

Highlights of the first draft Strategy include:

  • Supporting Traditional Owners to embed their rights and obligations into planning and management of the marine and coastal environment.
  • Improving the condition and connectivity of habitats and respect and care for marine and coastal areas.
  • Supporting sustainable use and development of the marine and coastal environment
  • Adapting to impacts of climate change.
  • Implementing integrated marine planning.
  • Identifying the resource needs and funding for sustainable marine and coastal management.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is working closely with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Marine and Coastal Council to develop Victoria’s first Strategy. State government departments, local government, marine and coastal managers, peak groups and associations have also been involved in developing the draft Strategy.
