Overview

Climate change adaptation is the process of adjustment or range of decisions taken by individuals and society to prepare for, and respond to, the impacts of climate change. Adaptation is key to responding to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.

Victoria's natural environments are already experiencing early impacts of a changing climate and these impacts are expected to increase dramatically through this century. There is a need to act now to respond to these challenges to help minimise consequences to the environment, as well as our society and the economy.

In Victoria, action on climate change is underpinned by the Climate Change Act 2017 (the Act). The Act requires Ministers for seven different systems, including the Natural Environment, to prepare five-yearly climate change adaptation action plans.

The Natural Environment Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2022-2026 aims to establish practices, systems, and knowledge to enable effective adaptation to climate impacts on Victoria’s natural systems.

The Natural Environment system includes land, water bodies, coastal waters, biodiversity, and ecological processes. This is one of seven systems creation Adaptation Action Plans.

The Natural Environment Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2022-2026 is a strategic document that provides direction for undertaking adaptation for the natural environment across Victorian landscapes. This document will inform sector-specific plans and strategies, such as the Bushfire Sector Strategy and the Victorian Waterway Management Strategy. The Natural Environment Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2022-2026 will complement the place-based Regional Adaptation Strategies and help guide other plans that implement on-ground adaptation actions.
